The bad news is it’s going to cost you another $10 to get Internet access if you fly the Delta shuttle between Boston, NY and DC. The good news is you can down get connected in-flight. Delta is adding Wi-Fi to it’s hourly shuttle flights to better compete with Amtrak’s NE train service.
Aircell, an in-flight commmunicaitons company, will provide this service to Delta on shuttle flights between Boston, NY and Washington, DC. American, Virgin and JetBlue offer a similar service.
The service begins tomorrow, December 16.
CNET writes that the service hasn’t really caught on. Boeing first offered a service called Connexion, which debuted in 2004 on a few international carriers, including Lufthansa, SAS, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Singapore Airlines. Boeing then canceled the service in 2006, when it was unable to find business among domestic airlines, principally because the extra 400 pounds of hardware increased costs without adding to profitability.
