118.6 Channels and Still Nothin’s On…

June 16, 2008

Nielsen’s estimate of how many channels the average household can receive is now just shy of 120 programming sources. But has the proliferation of viewing options increased viewership, engagement or couch-potato-satisfaction? Here’s an update of Bruce Springsteen’s view, which includes data from the Nielsen press release:

General dramas dominate, women can’t get their fill
Are consistent audience grabbers from the TV industry mill
African American homes watch less ad supported TV
And more broadcast stuff that you can tune to for free
Each year we have more channels when we turn the set on
118.6 channels and still nothin’s on…

Editor’s note: Nielsen’s additional factoids about the average home tuning to 16 channels each week and the impact of Spanish network TV have been omitted because they were two difficult to rhyme. But you can find them here.
